A Brief Moment of Meaning in Dark Souls
Patreon - www.patreon.com/MalmroseProjects
This video discusses how Dark Souls tells a narrative calling into question the ethics of violence by contextualizing violence via environmental storytelling.
This video also serves as somewhat of a "teaser" for a long-form video essay I'm hoping to make about Dark Souls hopefully some time early next year. The longer video will go in-depth on all of the major story elements (including all of the quest lines) and examine the game through the lens of existentialism and philosophical themes relating to the nature of violence, faith, purpose, corruption and honor in the face of an increasingly dire world.

Why the Taurus Demon fight is Special

Patreon - www.patreon.com/MalmroseProjects This is a quick video about the Taurus Demon fight and how it demonstrates the best of Dark Souls' design ethos. Initially this was meant to be part of my "A Brief Moment of Meaning" series but since it was more mechanically focused than thematic I decided to go with a different Dark Souls video for that series which will come out probably in August!

    I agree that the Capra demon has a lack of inherit versatility in its combat, but not for the reason you mention here. I think other play-styles other than armor + shield and tanking are viable for the fight, but only if you heavily use the stairs at the back of the arena. With those stairs, all other builds become viable (light roll, low AR weapons (for challenge runs), all casters (magic, pyro, miracle) and even two handing massive weapons), but the play-style mandated from those stairs is all very similar. You can 1v1 the dogs up there without the Capra touching you, can plunging attack cheese the boss, or even force the Capra to take fall damage without hitting it. The lack of versatility in approach for the Capra is a direct cause of the small arena + the two dogs thrown in, but this greatly limits the ability of the player to use multiple approaches in practice. Interesting video though, really enjoyed it!

    im taking a risk by commenting before i finish the video, but this theme reminds me of the priscilla fight (or lack thereof). I've always spared her, and I've always spared the mushrooms too. But, with regards to the latter, I think the motivation a lot of players have for killing them is simply, like, a kind of revenge(?). That they get an easy kill on an enemy who is defenseless is almost cathartic after being preyed on for so long. And the steady growth in player power feels like it is leading the player to this destination. From easy prey to merciless conqueror. It reminds me of the final act of Little Nightmares, where Six kills and eats a helpless nome, an act of spiritual cannibalism, simply to exercise the power she'd been stripped of for so long. There is a kind of practical justification (she's hungry), but there is no argument for self defense or outright necessity (the nome was harmless, and even offering her food).

    This is an interesting take, but personally I'd have to disagree. Sif's fight isn't about questioning your goals and the violence you bring, it's more about what becomes necessary in the pursuit of good. "In your way" or "self defense" arent really relevant when it comes to the fate of the world. Don't get me wrong, your takeaways are interesting, but the number of blatantly evil bosses and enemies sort of takes away from your point. Also you're missing the point that Sif attacks us, not the other way around. Even if he recognizes you. Even if he should trust you. To me, the villain of the Sif fight isn't you or anyone, it's nobody. Or Artorius depending on how you look at it. It's like much of the Dark Souls lore where it's about ending the suffering of others. Sifs fight isnt a cruelty, it's a somber triumph to put the wolf to rest beside it's master. Sif is suffering in mourning and you put him to rest in an honorable fight. Don't get me wrong the questions you ask are valid, I just don't think they extend to the rest of the game.

    • @MalmroseProjects
      @MalmroseProjects 5 днів тому

      i dont agree, because this presupposes that the main quest of the game is pursuing something good. frampt and kaathe present two diametrically opposed notions of what the chosen undead's purpose is. one frames the world as in dire need of a hero (frampt), but the other reveals that the former is a liar and traitor and not to be trusted. so then which ending of the game showcases an ultimate "good?" neither really, because they both end in a state of moral and narrative ambiguity. it's the pursuit of a false good that drives the story, which then reveals that *none* of the acts the player takes in the game were ever "necessary." i also disagree that the game is about ending the suffering of others. there are occasional glimpses of that (artorias being the most obvious example), but sif wasn't suffering prior to your action to attempt to kill them. you induced the suffering to complete a quest that was never good to begin with.

    Great video so far, but the stone dragon is a bad example of "Things we don't kill," because he's actually immortal in the game, and can't be killed no matter how much damage is dealth to him

    • @MalmroseProjects
      @MalmroseProjects 5 днів тому

      im aware, but that's why he's an example of something we don't kill. there's different reasons depending on different characters. "you literally can't kill him" is a canonical distinction made between that dragon and other dragons in the game that calls into question the necessity of violence. bc the stone dragon is both immortal and exclusively non-aggressive, he emphasizes how, before the gods came, the world was in a state of peace. thus, he demonstrates why killing the dragons is not a necessary act. which then gives you the opportunity to think abt how you treat the mortal dragons of the game

    Great video! Something I’d like to add is that this kind of moral choice also exists in a broader meta way in this game. The way the player engages with the game, and the fact that they engage with it in the first place, is being brought into question itself. Indeed, in a lot of cases, the answer to the question of if it is justifiable to kill can simply be that the player needs to progress. The boss is blocking the way, and the only way to keep joint is to kill it. This is clearly not a moral decision, and brings into the equation the fact that this is seemingly not even a choice at all. There is indeed no pacifist option and some bosses are mandatory. However, the player has the choice NOT to progress. Dark souls recontextualizes the act of giving up by making hollows a representation of it and making it a sort of meta story choice. Usually, when a game presents you with moral options, quitting the game to go and do something else isn’t one of them. But in the case of dark souls, it is. This is especially the case considering that progressing through the game isn’t actually an objectively good moral choice: it is possible to view the game as having only bad endings. By making progress both force you to commit “bad” actions that end up being not done for any good reason and useless anyway, the game presents the act of giving up as a choice to be made and not necessarily a bad one, tying into the game’s grander theme of letting go and that it may sometimes be better to let the fire die out. One of the most interesting cases of this recontextualization for me is the demon faction. Demons are nearly always seen as an inherently evil race and in the great majority of fantasy fiction serve as dangerous antagonists. And at a surface level, they are too in dark souls, being obstacles attacking you and preventing your progression. But taking into context the fact that progression is not necessarily the right choice to make, demons can be seen in a different light. Are they themselves the ones who are justified in stopping you? If we look deeper into the game, we can see that demons are actually people with a culture of their own with reasons to fight going deeper than a simple savage craving for violence like what would be expected from most demons in a fantasy setting. I personally love the interpretation of demons in dark souls being like any other race but being framed as evil trough their role in gameplay as well as their appearance and customs (skull-like head, living in lava area, looking scary for human standards in general). Trough both lore tidbits and the antagonistic role you hold in the story, the demons are humanized and go from object to subject, as you’ve brilliantly put it, and serve as an other reminder that stopping your quest could be the right choice from a purely moral standpoint.

    a note on meaning: finding meaning in stories is about imagining thought processes that could plausibly have generated the elements of that story. death of the author is about how the thought process that *actually* generated the story isn't the *only* one that might have generated those elements.

    • @irisofrosebloom8741
      @irisofrosebloom8741 5 днів тому

      technically it's not just about identifying "thought processes" that might have generated a given story, but rather identifying potential generating processes in general, including ones that aren't exclusi100% vely cognitive, like natural selection or the use of the technology on which the story was produced. the essence of meaning in general is learning to predict the future from the past, in an almost algorithmic sense. learning to retroactively "predict" the contents of a story, based on some generating algorithm you came up with (like a thought process or "algorithm" strongly influnced by "violence is bad"-ish ideas), is only a special case of a broader phenomenon.

    For me, the most optimized way I've seen to kill the Taurus Demon is how speedrunner QueueKyoo did it in this run: ua-cam.com/video/ogemypIquNo/v-deo.htmlsi=4wC_P7jpjM71nGsx Of course, the level of knowledge and skill to do this is enormous and the vast majority of players will not be able to replicate the feat, but it is still impressive. As for the Capra Demon, I always, always use the strategy of killing him using a bow and fire bombs. He's not fun, and the limited space of the arena + the 2 dogs is what really makes the fight a problem.

    Brilliant essay!! One the note of the Capra demon, after many playthroughs I realized it's a dog test and once you know how the dog moveset work the boss becomes a breeze (imo) but the problem is that there isn't enough build up to learn how dogs work in the game. And also fromsoftware did a bad job on the camera in tight spaces..

    • @BlueSquareInWhiteCircle
      @BlueSquareInWhiteCircle 8 днів тому

      Did a run on Capra today just to "fact" check my assumptions or if I remembered incorrectly. Pyromancer sl1(not using pyromancy), Naked, Hand Axe, Heather Shield, Wolf Ring(40 poise), from Firelink shrine 10 estus. Shield and axe can be gotten from undead merchant, ring found on ledge on the other side of the cliff with the illusory wall bonfire in darkroot garden. Without the ring (0 poise) it was "impossible". The time window for dodging dog attacks were to narrow and random to not get caught in a stun chain with to much geometry to get stuck on. The boss is basicly a poise check. The run back from firelink has 2 assassin's and 2 dogs with bleed and stun with 3 set of narrow stairs leading to the boss room. These stairs with the dogs hint to the solution for this boss and gives practice on dealing with dogs in close proximity. Capra moves slow, attacks in a large cone, pivots medium speed and deals the most damage. Dogs moves fast, attack like forward projectile, pivot slow, struggle with stairs and close proximity from side or behind. Using the stairs, kiting Capra from a distance and dealing with the dogs close up is key on low souls levels.

That's not fun, thats just a checklist before fighting the enemy, and really only one way to fight the enemy. Taurus Demon is pretty much the same, you always run to the ladder, apply gold pine resin, do a plunge attack, and then get trapped in front of his body and the fog wall and then hit by it's janky hitbox. One time I did made the demon fall off the ledge which was clutch and I wish they brought something like that back today. But overall the Taurus Demon is very low on my most enjoyable bosses and I'm pretty sure if the bridge was instead a big open circle or square would make the boss fight much more enjoyable and allow me to learn it's moveset better and also not let me get hit so easily by it's bad weapon hitbox. Honestly so many bosses in Dark Souls 1 have bad hitboxes like Iron Golem and O&S.

      i hear what you're saying but like i said, there is literally a big open circle area, you just have to lure the taurus demon to it, the boss's design is solid because it accommodates different playstyles in different ways. i did also say the capra demon was a flawed boss because it doesnt allow for a versatile way of beating the boss. i think the capra demon gets too much shit, but i'll admit it's one of my least favorite bosses. if you take each boss in isolation, capra is one of the worst, but if you take the game as a whole and look at what the bosses contribute to the game, i'd take capra over demon firesage or ceaseless discharge easily

      @@MalmroseProjects I understand where you are coming from as well! Taurus Demon does have an "open" circle arena but it's pretty small and you lose out on free damage from the plunge as a result because trying to climb up the ladder a second time is pretty challenging. Taurus Demon does represent what souls games have lost though in the years where instead of challenging you on something besides reflexes they challenge you on something else and a different way to play. Ceaseless Discharge is also pretty low on my list even though that boss requires you to play a different way tbh lol, and firesage is really just a reskin of asylum demon, kinda lazy. Very nice video and well said! subscribed and hope to see your fully made Dark Souls video! ☺

      Nah Taurus is fun, & a cool fight. You say there's only one way to fight & then say it gets you stuck. Cheesing them isn't the only option. Its just the one you choose. I didn't use the ledge first time I played through this & didn't even know what hit boxes were. People are so nitpicky & demanding nowadays

      Taurus demon only has like 5 attacks. The fight would be 10000x worse in a flat round arena. If you want that just fight the Taurus demons in the demon ruins. Souls fights need more variety than just mashing the circle button and that’s where I agree heavily with this video.

    One thing you didn't bring up is if you explore the undead burg you can find black fire bombs and gold pine resin two items the boss is very weak to and all builds can use so the game also rewards exploration

    This film explained to me why I have always loved Lynch works, especially Twin Peaks.
